The Alchemist

What is this book about?

A young shepherd boy from Spain has a recurring dream that there is treasure buried near the pyramids in Egypt. He sells his flock of sheep, crosses Spain, crosses the sea to Morocco, crosses the Sahara desert, and makes his way to Egypt — all in pursuit of this dream.

Along the way he meets an old king, a crystal merchant, an Englishman searching for an alchemist, and the alchemist himself. Each meeting teaches him something. The journey itself is the real treasure — though the literal treasure also exists.

The central idea

Coelho's big idea is what he calls "Personal Legend" — every person has a dream they were born to pursue, and the entire universe conspires to help them achieve it, if they are brave enough to try. The book is essentially a fable about following your heart even when it is difficult and scary.

It is a simple idea, told simply. And that simplicity is both the book's strength and the reason some people find it too easy or too optimistic.

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

Why so many people love it

The Alchemist has sold over 65 million copies worldwide. That is an extraordinary number. I think people love it because it gives them permission to take their dreams seriously — it says your instincts are worth following, your desires are not silly, and the journey matters even if the destination is uncertain.

It is also a genuinely fast and enjoyable read. I finished it in one sitting on a Sunday afternoon. The prose is clean and the story moves well.

What I took from it

Kaif's Personal Note

I read The Alchemist during a time when I was unsure about a lot of things in my life. It did not solve any of my problems but it reminded me that uncertainty is part of any worthwhile journey. Some people say it is too simple or too spiritual — maybe, but sometimes simple wisdom is exactly what you need. I think of it as a warm and encouraging book.
